Leveraging the Joint Venture

Allergan India Joint Venture is an excellent example of building on the strengths of both partners. Specific areas of synergy and leverage are:

a) Manufacturing

Allergan pharmaceutical products are made at NPILs state of the art facility in Pithampur. This has ensured that the Indian consumer gets products manufactured to the best international quality standards at Indian prices.

b) Raw Material Sourcing

Allergan has worked with NPIL to develop and source selected bulk drugs for their global requirements from India. Operations/sourcing commenced in 2002 & NPIL plant in Hyderabad now supplies 2 bulk drugs to Allergan Inc for its Global requirements. This has enabled cost reduction for Allergan and is a valuable financial opportunity for NPIL as well.

c) R&D Collaboration

The joint venture also uses the product development capability of Nicholas Piramal to develop new ophthalmic products for India and the Asia Pacific region. We have already launched 7 products through this effort and more are in the pipeline. This enables the company to meet localised needs better.

d) Exports

Efforts are to use India as a cost effective source for certain markets, especially, in the neighboring region. Ophthalmic products are being exported since 2002 to countries in Asia & Africa regions.
